Le Grand Restaurant at Mountain Residence is a 295-seat dining space that seamlessly blends the functionality of a large hotel breakfast area with a more intimate setting for daytime and evening meals. As the lights dim and the breakfast equipment is concealed behind curtains, the atmosphere transforms – inviting guests to relax, savor their meals, and immerse themselves in the surrounding beauty.
COMBINATION OF MATERIALS
The restaurant’s interior combines natural materials with modern, functional design. The walls are clad in thermally treated wood – in some areas retaining a classic plank appearance, while in others mimicking shingles, the wooden tiles traditionally used on Carpathian rooftops. Leading into the restaurant, the corridor ceiling is adorned with a striking vine installation that undulates like a flowing wave.
SYMBOLISM + NATURE
The restaurant’s most dramatic visual feature is Windbreaker is a 90-meter-long installation symbolizing an untamed force moving freely through space, curving and weaving around structural elements. This monumental piece seamlessly transitions from walls and columns to the ceiling, composed of nearly three million reed stalks. Crafted from 215 cubic meters of reeds, 940 sheaves were meticulously arranged by hand to achieve its fluid, organic form. The installation process took 90 days to complete.
Natural textures dominate the interior – stone, wool, wood, and reeds create a warm yet sophisticated ambiance. At the entrance, a hostess desk made from solid wooden beams sets the tone. The columns are partially wrapped in gushka, a yarn spun from the wool of Carpathian sheep, adding a soft, tactile contrast. Dry reeds form a striking juxtaposition against the sleek, cool surfaces of stainless steel elements throughout the space.
WINE ROOM
A dedicated wine area, elevated on a podium, offers a more intimate setting for leisurely dining. At its center is a circular glass wine room, designed to maintain the ideal microclimate for hundreds of bottles while also serving as a striking visual feature.
POINT OF VIEW ON SOMETHING NEW
Expansive panoramic windows and a spacious summer terrace enhance the restaurant’s connection to nature. Adjacent to the terrace stands a nine-meter-tall sculpture of a Chugayster – a mythical forest guardian brought to life through 1,700 grapevine branches meticulously arranged around a metal frame. A glowing heart-shaped lamp flickers within its chest, adding a mystical presence to the space. More than just a tribute to local folklore, the sculpture is integrated into the natural ecosystem, providing shelter for birds that nest within its entwined branches.
– Our philosophy of terroir design revolves around using natural materials and embracing the cultural heritage of a place. With Mountain Residence, we drew inspiration from Carpathian legends, manifesting their essence through tactile elements like vines and reeds – materials rarely seen in interior design. – shares Volodymyr Nepyivoda, managing partner of YOD Group.
